About Carna

Carna is a non-profit organization at the University of Michigan dedicated to spreading mental health resources to students across campus. Our central goal is to create resources for students, made by students. The main resource we produce is pamphlets, specifically geared to address the mental challenges many students face in the academic environment. Some of our most popular pamphlets include: Stress, Understanding Anxiety, and Sleep. On social media, we engage in open conversations about mental health with everyday students on campus.
Each semester, we host 1-2 events for students to reinforce the resources they have access to and offer safe, inclusive spaces to build community.
If you're a student at UMich hoping to get involved, you can fill out the interest form here. If you're looking for resources, please navigate to the 'Info Packets' and 'Pamphlets' tab to see all of our content!
History
Carna was founded by two Washington, D.C. high schoolers, Noémie Durand and Jean-Pierre Roberts, with a shared vision of making mental health conversations more accessible and less stigmatized. What began as a simple effort to reach peers who lacked access to mental wellness resources grew into a registered 501(c)3 non-profit and social enterprise. From the start, Noémie and Jean-Pierre were driven by the belief that mental health information and support should be available to everyone, regardless of background or identity, a value that has remained central to Carna's mission. Founded and led by young women, Black, and LGBTQ+ voices, Carna was built from the ground up to reflect and serve communities that are too often left out of mainstream mental health conversations.

The name "Carna" comes from the Roman goddess of the same name. She is a goddess who protects the vital internal organs, especially the heart. Our founders chose this homage because it potrayed our unique mission as protectors and healers of people's hearts and well-being. <3
